Celebrities have been having their teeth whitened for years and most celebrities have had either veneers or braces also. Teeth whitening materials have come a long way in the last decade. The materials are now state-of-the-art and some have desensitisers built into them to help seal and protect the enamel. Be assured that having your teeth whitened by your dentist causes no more damage to enamel than a glass of fizzy water but having a knock-out smile can certainly give your confidence a boost.
There’s now a large body of evidence that suggests that patients with gum disease have higher levels of cancer, heart disease, low birth weight babies, diabetes, dementia and arthritis,’ says British Dental Health Foundation Chief Executive Dr Nigel Carter.
Top Cleaning Tips
USE AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH. Clean your teeth twice a day for two minutes using an electric toothbrush, such as the Oral-B Professional Care. The difference between using an electric toothbrush compared to a manual one is like the difference between using a dustpan and brush or a vacuum cleaner on the carpet.
BRUSH BEFORE BREAKFAST. If you brush your teeth after breakfast, you should consider changing your routine. A glass of orange juice with breakfast will have softened the enamel and hard brushing immediately afterwards will make the problem worse, so clean your teeth before hand. After breakfast, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash.
BE CAREFUL WITH FRUIT. Acid in fruit causes erosion and damages the enamel on teeth. Avoid a lot of citrus fruit like oranges and lemons. Eat strawberries instead, which contain malic acid which can break down stains and are a natural teeth whitener.
CHEW GUM. Chew sugar-free gum containing plaque-reducing xylitol after meals for 10 minutes until the flavour disappears. Chewing produces saliva which washes the teeth and neutralises some of the acid produced by bacteria. It is this acid which erodes enamel and eventually causes cavities.
DON’T FORGET TO FLOSS. Try to floss before brushing because then the brush should remove any loosened food and remaining remnants.
AVOID FOODS WHICH STAIN. Avoid tea, coffee, red wine and, of course, smoking.
VISIT YOUR DENTIST. Go to the dentist at least twice a year and visit the hygienist every three to six months to get rid of the plaque and tartar that brushing has missed.
KEEP BREATH FRESH. The best way to halt halitosis is to scrape your tongue on a daily basis to remove bacteria and drink plenty of water.
