Is an electric or manual toothbrush better for my teeth?

If you’re shopping for either presents or stocking fillers, here’s a list of our top ten dental gifts.
Do you agree that there are only so many candle holders we need in our lives? And you gave socks last year, so that’s out. These days, as we try to reduce waste and de-clutter our lives, it makes sense to give gifts that are consumable or useful, rather than decorative. Perhaps you worry, though, that a gift associated with dental care may give out the wrong message. So why is it acceptable to give someone soap, but not toothpaste? We believe giving someone gifts that will help them to have a healthy and comfortable mouth is perfectly acceptable!
Tongue scrapers – it’s quite likely that whoever you buy one of these for won’t already have one. Some are quite fancy and, if opened in front of friends or family, could be an entertaining talking point. Choose from a range of styles in plastic, copper or stainless steel.
Toothbrush covers – whether it’s to keep the head of a toothbrush clean when it’s all packed up for a journey, or a covered rack for hanging on the bathroom wall, there are a lot of options on the market to help keep the family’s toothbrushing kit clean and tidy.
Inter-dental brushes – these are useful, but can be a tricky gift. People who use these handy little brushes usually need a few specific sizes, so it can be difficult to know which ones are best. If you do know, then they’re a great stocking filler. Alternatively, it’s possible to find a selection box!
Teething toys – are a fun stocking filler for a baby. And they come in all kinds of cute designs and cheerful colours. Moreover, they are a lot better for baby than many of the teething gels that are on the market.
Dental floss – is always handy and a great stocking-filler. After all, we should be using meters of it and replacing it often. As some of us like to carry a roll in our handbag too, or keep some in the office draw, just in case, one is never enough.
Fluoride toothpaste – is the essential. We’re always having to buy it, so why not slip a tube into a stocking instead of a bar of chocolate? Or as well as the bar of chocolate. This is an especially good gift for children, and themed packaging can make it more acceptable too. Remember to check the fluoride content is age-appropriate.
Chewing gum – brilliant as a stocking-filler because it doesn’t look like a dental gift at all. Yet chewing gum, the sugar-free type, of course, with xylitol is beneficial to oral health. Oral bacteria can’t digest xylitol, and it also interferes with the way bacteria cling to teeth. Although chewing gum isn’t enough on it’s own to prevent decay, it has research-backed advantages.
Bamboo toothbrushes – with our current environmental concerns, perhaps this is the one gift we should all give. Even in a household of electric toothbrush users, there are times when a spare manual brush is useful. A bunch of brushes displayed in the bathroom, can be decorative too. Why not get creative? Recycle a jar, add a few brushes, and dress it all up with a festive bow!
Tooth whitening – as this is the treatment we’re most asked about, you can be sure it will go down well with someone in your family. Ask your dentist about the presentation-boxed tray-whitening kits for home-use. Prescription tooth-whitening is the most effective, and safest method of lightening teeth. Please note, though, that whoever gets this gift will need to visit the dentist for the prescription. That said, we’re confident they’ll be delighted.
An electric toothbrush – this is the star of our top ten dental gifts! For people who have never used an electric toothbrush, it will be a welcome revelation. For someone who loves their electric brush but would like an upgrade, there’s plenty of choice these days. Modern electric brushes come with a range of functions, from a simple timer to different speed settings, for sensitive teeth, gum care, whitening and polishing. And the joy of giving will be yours, as the recipient will be mentally thanking you for your gift twice a day!
