Children’s dental review appointments – Children’s Day

Children’s dental reviews this half-term?

Yes!

We understand you may have other plans for your half-term holiday. But trust us – if the children haven’t been to the dentist in the last six months, then it’s time to make an appointment!

My children are registered with SpaDental

If your children are already registered with SpaDental Chard or SpaDental Plymouth, you’ll know that our dedicated Children’s Days are a great time to bring the children along for their regular check up.

We encourage all our patients to book their next dental appointment before leaving the surgery. But if your children haven’t been to the dentist for over six months, or if you’re not sure when their next appointment should be, give us a call or send us an email and we’ll keep you on schedule.

Because we prioritise preventive care, we’re a child-friendly practice. On Children’s Days we try to book as many appointments for children as we can so we can really focus on them. This means we can help your children to feel comfortable and happy. Moreover, as Children’s Days are during half-terms and holidays, it means they don’t miss out on school!

Some children find visits to the dentist especially difficult. They may need extra support in advance of an appointment so they can get the treatment they need. Read more about how thinking about different sensory experiences can affect children.

Advice and care given during children’s review appointments

During the appointment the dentist checks for overall dental health and offers advice and care in these three main areas:

• Oral hygiene advice to reduce the presence of bacteria, through brushing and flossing.
• Dietary advice to reduce sugars so that bacteria have nothing to metabolise.
• Treatment and advice to strengthen dental enamel, through the use of fluoride toothpaste, mouthwashes, and varnishes.

We’d like to see as many of our young patients over half-term as we can!

Keeping teeth healthy – the 3 essentials:

• Brush all the surfaces of our teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, especially last thing at night.
• Eat healthy food, low in sugar, fat and salt.
• Make regular visits to the dentist.

The earlier children learn to take good care of their teeth, the better chance they have of keeping healthy teeth for life. We’re here to help!

Why is NHS care for children and young adults so good?

If you are 18* or younger and registered as an NHS patient, the NHS covers the cost of your dental treatment. This means you don’t have to pay anything for your NHS dental care, whether you just have a review appointment, or you need to have essential treatment.

• Children under 16 will need a parent or guardian to get in touch to make an appointment.
• If you’re a teenager of 18 or under but over 16, then you can make your own appointment.

No need to feel nervous about coming to the dentist

Our dental teams are very friendly and welcoming. We want you to come in and see us, so we’ll do our very best to help you feel comfortable and confident.

We’d like to remind you that your dentist is obliged to de-register NHS patients who don’t attend the practice for more than two years, or miss scheduled appointments.
