Your dental care during November lockdown

During the November lockdown, we want to let you know that dentists are still open. 

During the lockdown that began in March of this year, dentists were shut down. However, recognising that dental practices have rigorous operating procedures in place to control the spread of Covid-19, we can stay open during the November lockdown.

Government guidance

The information released by the government on 31st October states that we must stay at home.

We are, however, allowed to go out for specific purposes, including: “for any medical concerns, reasons, appointments and emergencies.”

On November 2nd, the Chief Dental Officer, Sara Hurley clarified the situation in an NHS dentistry and oral health update: “I can confirm that this includes NHS dental services. Therefore, during the period of tighter restrictions practices should remain open to treat patients.”

Prioritise oral care at home

We know people suffered though the long weeks of the last lockdown. One of the most common problems was fillings that fell out, and pain from dental infections.

Taking care of our teeth well at home is the best way to stay dentally fit. We all need to make sure that we brush twice a day for two minutes, and use floss and/or interdental brushes once a day. Help both young children and teenagers establish good oral hygiene routines too. It will save them pain and costly dental work in the future.

It is worth remembering too, many people find oral care is easier to manage with an electric toothbrush. Although an electric toothbrush may seem expensive, in the long run it can save bills for dental restoration work.

The other dental essential is fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride really does protect teeth by helping to strengthen enamel. It’s important to just spit, not rinse the mouth after brushing, so the fluoride stays on the teeth to do its good work.

Our care during the November lockdown

We are continuing to screen all patients before making face-to-face appointments. This is to prevent unnecessary travel or exposure. Our aim is to help both patients and staff stay safe.

Our team will check what your problem is, ask you about your possible exposure to coronavirus, and also check your medical history. If you do need to come into the practice for dental care, we manage your appointment carefully to help keep you safe.
