Patients often ask, “Will veneers improve my teeth?”
For many people who are concerned about the appearance of their teeth, veneers are often the answer they’re looking for. Veneers make a significant difference to a person’s smile because they change both the colour and the shape of our natural teeth.
As every patient has individual dental needs, during an initial consultation your dentist will take time to make a thorough assessment of your teeth and mouth. It is an opportunity for you to ask questions to understand the process, and for the dentist to learn what your expectations are. After a thorough examination, your dentist will talk you through possible treatments and expected outcomes. Together you will agree on an individual treatment plan.
Pamela Higgs BDS explains:
“Veneers are a cosmetic/restorative solution to improve the appearance of teeth. They can be used to correct discoloured teeth and to improve appearance if teeth are gapped, crooked, uneven or chipped.
We can veneer teeth using composite material or porcelain. Porcelain veneers will give a more long lasting effect as composite veneers may stain over time. A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is applied to the front of the tooth. Treatment usually involves two visits, although more complex cases require additional appointments.”
Pamela Higgs of SpaDental Tewkesbury enjoys all aspects of dental care, and particularly enjoys building long-lasting relationships with her patients.
A dentist can transform misshapen or damaged teeth by bonding thin, carefully crafted veneers to damaged or poorly shaped teeth. Minimally invasive, veneers are a make-over for teeth. The application of veneers is a treatment that’s not usually difficult for the patient, yet can make a significant difference to how the patient’s teeth look.
Good-looking teeth appear healthy – teeth that look as though they’ve been cared for. Veneers can help cover up past neglect, damage or genetic imperfections. For example, veneers are a good way of disguising discolouration caused by a root canal, trauma, or certain medications. And, as we get older, even if we’ve been looking after our teeth, they show signs of aging too and veneers offer a way to have younger looking teeth again.
As part of the assessment and planning process, your dentist may suggest different treatment options.
Sometimes patients believe they need veneers to make a difference, yet less expensive, more minimal treatments are sometimes enough to make a noticeable difference.
For example, the dentist may first recommend having your teeth straightened with clear braces, as this helps move teeth into their best position. Then, once your teeth are straighter, and have been whitened too, you may decide that no more changes are needed. A staged approach can be helpful as part of the decision making process, and save money too!
Having veneers is not painful or especially difficult. In fact, having veneers is an excellent way of improving your smile with very little discomfort.
It is important to realise, however, that the process involves removing a fine layer of enamel from the front surface of the tooth. People with sensitive teeth may find this uncomfortable. Moreover, it also means that you will always need a veneer or some other protection, such as a crown, to cover your tooth. It’s not a reversible process.
Porcelain veneers reflect light the same way as tooth enamel does, so they match natural teeth well. Moreover, porcelain doesn’t stain in the same way that tooth enamel, or composite resin, does. This means that with a set of porcelain veneers your teeth will stay looking fresh.
Done badly, veneered teeth can look unnatural. If you are considering veneers, we recommend you go to your usual dentist. Go to a dentist who knows you and your smile – someone you can trust.
For some patients it can be enough to veneer just one tooth, matching it to the colour and shape of your natural teeth. An alteration to just one or two teeth is usually discreet, effective and easy to get used to.
Other patients may need a row of veneers. If you’re planning a significant change to your dentition, it’s important to establish with your dentist what sort of finished look you’re hoping to achieve. Your dentist will always take time to understand your requests, and discuss realistic expectations with you. The best cosmetic dentistry focuses on creating a natural look, that suits your overall appearance.
After the treatment, sometimes people take a little time to adjust to their altered appearance. However, most people find themselves looking in the mirror more, glancing at their reflection in windows, and smiling a lot.
If you would like to learn more about how veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth, make an appointment with your dentist for an initial assessment. Your dentist will discuss options with you, and prepare a treatment plan with costings for your consideration.
