Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Dentistry

24th October 2021 | Posted by: Vanessa Giraud

October is Black History Month in the UK, the theme for this year is: ‘Black to the Past.’ Black History Month (IBHM-UK) aims to uncover and spread stories that have been lost or hidden. The journey to recognition for people from minority groups is more difficult. Their achievements are therefore all the more inspiring.

The theme for Black History Month 2021 looks back at history with a view to updating the conversation for the future. By looking at the valuable contributions people have made to our culture we can work together to further inclusivity and equal opportunity.

What is ‘race ahead’?

Did you know?

” The NHS is the largest employer of people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds in the country and across Europe, the objective of Race Ahead will be to tackle the workplace discrimination that some of our staff continue to face.”

Race Ahead

Throughout October, the NHS has hosted a series of conversations and panel discussions. Topics covered explore issues such as:

Diversity in Dentistry

black woman with nouthwash for diversity in dentistry Earlier this year, in May, the Diversity in Dentistry Action Group (DDAG) published a report entitled Equality, diversity and inclusion within dentistry. A profession wide commitment.

The report recognises the need for commitment to collaborative action for change. Key points listed are:

Opportunities with SpaDental

We acknowledge the need for ongoing action supporting equality, diversity and inclusion.

Traditionally dental practices in major cities, such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, have a more diverse workforce. Our practices across the west of England are committed to embracing a diverse workforce. We encourage job applications from talented and dedicated dental health professionals.

Earlier this year, The Home Office/Health Education England approved SpaDental to sponsor and mentor qualified dentists applying to work in the UK. We welcome the opportunity to work with talented professionals from around the world.

The process for dentists with overseas qualifications to work as a dentist in England is rigorous. Applicants must take an Overseas Registration Examination. Currently, there is a backlog of people waiting for the exam to resume, so meanwhile patients may benefit from having a trained dentist working as a dental therapist.

“The social justice movement towards a more equitable, diverse and inclusive society and profession, as a result of the Black Lives Matters movement, has prevailed against all odds, and that gives me an immense sense of hope and joy.” Funmi Oluwajana
