Henry our helpful Brushasorous
Our talented duo Heather Cresswell and Lorraine Allen are out in the community again. They’re on a mission to teach children how to brush teeth better.
And they’re not alone. Henry the Helpful Brushasorous goes with them too, and keeps everyone smiling.
It’s so important for children to learn how to look after their teeth. Heather and Lorraine accept invitations to go into schools to talk with children. They demonstrate better brushing skills and stress the importance of having healthy teeth.
“We had a super busy day speaking to over ninety children in total. And what a wonderful group of polite and interested children they are! From the start they were keen to engage and interact with us.”
On Wednesday 21st of November, the team was at St Edwards primary school. Heather and Lorraine had three fantastic sessions, talking to children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. The Plymouth Herald was even there to take photos!
Heather and Lorraine getting the children involved with the Good and Bad food game.
Our first session was with the delightful three and four year olds in Reception. We used pictures to help illustrate our points. And, of course, the children were keen to learn from Henry our Brushasorous. They loved watching him have his teeth brushed! So when it came to their own tooth brushing activity, the children showed us just how much they had learned.
Lorraine and Heather got the children up and moving around for our game categorising food as either good or bad. They were thrilled to know so many right answers!
Children between five and six are becoming more independent, as well as more dexterous. This is a great time to be practicing better brush control.
The lovely children of Year Two
We’re pleased to report that the children knew a lot about the harmful effects of sugar in their diets and the damage some foods can do to their teeth. Moreover, they asked some excellent questions. When it came to their activity, the children showed some excellent brushing technique.
Finally it was the turn of Year 2. At this age, children should be brushing their teeth for themselves, with adult supervision. We were totally impressed by the brushing know-how they had, so we discussed diet in greater depth, and how what we eat affects our body.
Moreover, they were especially thrilled to be provided with a toothbrush, mouth mirror and a brushing timer.
“The children were very good at remembering our motto:
‘Spit, don’t rinse!’.”
The team, including Henry, will be returning to St Edwards during the next couple of weeks to speak to Year 3, 4, 5 & 6. We would like to thank the staff, teachers and especially the delightful children of St Edwards Primary School for making us feel so welcome.
